Claire Heywood, Crushed Lemons and Non-Refrigerated Food on the Road.

I finished a contract with an architecture firm in Fort Collins. They had been working on a net zero energy building with a target of no gasoline used during construction. I left the office after making the decision not to push for a position with the firm. I met with Claire immediately afterward at a burrito shop and sat with her eating tortilla chips and talking about changes in our lives and housing situations. She had been on a US bus trip in a green converted school bus with several friends while I was in south east Asia, Thailand, Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

She was familiar with alternative living situations and said she might be living in a yurt soon, but expressed a subtle displeasure at more alternative housing. I was feeling the same about a change from a conventional upper middle class living situation to a farm or a tiny home or shipping container. All these options were investigated by the people involved with the bus and others like myself who were peripherally involved.

She moved to Denver and started to perform the music she had written shortly after our conversation.

I became aware of the release of the song Python on a playlist that artist Tycho had put togther on Spotify. I was very excited and surprised at the exposure of her digital release.

Her latest single, Crushed Lemons, seems to be a conversation between cultural identities. “I want to drink, made from crushed lemons”

Personally I thought of it as a commentary about wealth and alchohol, the alcohol culture of Denver and groups without religious affiliation seeking a dryer niche within it. Also the ablution efforts of Trump’s presidency and covid, making the alchohol culture like the microbrew culture of northern Colorado almost a brutish nucance to Trump’s patriarchal purification efforts and the decernments of the medical elite.

Now I often drink Kombucha but the natural support of microbrew culture has always been a part of my life. I’m physically effected by the changes I have made in my life in relation to beer and resturant culture. The stomach sometimes churns in an otherworldly way, as if in battle with another dimension of thought and motion. Currently living on the road the tumultuos feelings of the mind body and stomach I have experinced behind the wheel has been suprising.

Organic, Probiotic, Vegan and Vegetarian food can be hard to find while traveling but it is very affordable and can be done. Legumes, a grain and a vegetable or fermented slaw can be maintained as a diet while living in a vehicle without a refrigerator. You can get canned organic beans from Natural Grocer or Whole Foods for around 1.29$ a can in CO, NM, and AZ, Tortilla Chips or Rice and Canned Roasted Tomatoes or a fermented slaw. All the canned goods need no refigeration and are ready to eat. Try it and listen to Claire Heywood’s music.
